Absolutely wonderful!
I read this book shortly after becoming a step-mother to two preschoolers and while pregnant with my first child. I had no idea what I was doing as a parent, and this book helped me to gain some direction and confidence. I can't wait to read the next two books in the series!

The Mystery of Edisto Island
Published in Paperback by Sandlapper Pub Co (December, 1994)
Authors: Idella Bodie, Gay Haff Kovach, and Barbara Stone
Average review score:

The Mystery of Edisto Island
I found this book on my family's vacation at Pawley's Island in South Carolina. I chose it because I like mysteries and this one also contained some of the early history of SC and the area we were visiting. The book was filled with suspense and excitement. I had trouble with old Gabe speaking gullah so I was glad for a glossary at the end of the book.

I read a few chapters every night before I went to bed. At times I couldn't put it down, especially when we were about to find out why the couple, Hugh and Roxie, were after old Gabe!

One of my favorite parts in the story was when Phil and Jerry
were hiding in the shed where the shrimp boats come in to dock. The couple was on to them and might have taken them captive if they were caught helping Gabe.

I liked the kids' plot with the "conjure man" to get clothes from the couple so he could make voo-doo dolls. It was interesting how superstition was part of Gabe's beliefs. I was really nervous when the kids were taken captive and put on Botany Bay Island. I thought it was resourceful of them to spell HELP out of sea shells.

I read the mystery of Pony Hollow when i was in grade 3. It was one of the first books that i'd ever read. This book will hold your attention till the very end. You'll fall in love with Panda (the horse) and all the history of mining ponies. Also the mystery of one horse named Oberon will make you wonder at first if he's still alive.

The Mystery of the Star Ruby (Boxcar Children Mysteries, 89)
Published in School & Library Binding by Albert Whitman & Co (July, 2002)
Authors: Gertrude Chandler Warner and Hodges Soileau
Average review score:

The mystery of the star ruby
I read The Mystery of the Star Ruby for a project at Waukazoo Elementary. I thought it was a good book because it is a boxcar mystery and the kids are detectives that solve mysteries and they are in the same family. I think others would read it that are ages 8-11. I would recommend this book to kids from elementary school.

Mystery of the Stone Tiger (Her the Dana Girls Mystery Stories, 1)

Author: Carolyn Keene
Average review score:

A FANTASTIC MYSTERY/ADVENTURE FOR MIDDLE READERS
THIS IS AN EXCELLENT INTRODUCTION TO THE NEW DANA GIRLS MYSTERY SERIES WRITTEN BY THE SAME AUTHOR OF THE NANCY DREW BOOKS, CAROLYN KEENE. THE PREVIOUS DANA GIRLS STORIES WERE WRITTEN IN THE 1930'S AND INCLUDED 16 BOOKS. THIS NEW DANA SERIES BEGAN IN 1963 WITH THIS PARTICULAR TITLE AND ENDED IN 1979 AFTER THE 15TH BOOK WAS PUBLISHED. THIS BOOK INTRODUCES US TO 2 SISTERS WHO, LIKE NANCY DREW & HER FRIENDS, SOLVE MYSTERIES. THE DANA'S HAVE A SIMILAR FAMILY BACKGROUND AS NANCY, FOR THEY TOO WERE ORPHANED AS CHILDREN. WE MEET FOR THE FIRST TIME THEIR LOVING RELATIVES WHO CARE FOR THEM, ALONG WITH THEIR SUPERSTITIOUS MAID WHO IS FUN TO OBSERVE. MIDNIGHT VISITORS, CLOAKED IN BLACK, AND SECRET PANELS MAKE THIS MYSTERY FUN TO READ. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ENTIRE DANA GIRLS SERIES TO INTERESTED READERS BECAUSE MOST PEOPLE ARE SURPRISED TO HEAR THAT KEENE WROTE SOMETHING OTHER THAN NANCY DREW!!

Myths in Stone: Religious Dimensions of Washington, D.C.
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (05 February, 2001)
Author: Jeffrey F. Meyer
Average review score:

Washington, D.C. as a place of spiritual pilgrimage...
Who would have thought of Washington, D.C. as a spiritual destination? You will think so after reading this rich, soulful guidebook to the capital's architectural idiosyncrasies. This author, whom I find more inspiring and much more readable than mythologist Joseph Campbell, escorts the reader on a journey to the mythic center of what Lincoln called "the last great hope of mankind." What better time in our history to visit and revisit it as sacred space. In the words of the author, "to visit Washington is to experience the retelling of a story of mythic proportions." The conclusions Meyer draws from his epiphany, described in the chapter entitled "Reflections," are alone worth the price of the book.

Needles of Stone
Published in Paperback by Academy Chicago Pub (February, 1983)
Author: Tom Graves
Average review score:

Needles of Stone
Needles of Stone is probably the most definitive and scientific work on the subject of Ley Lines and standing stones. Graves opens his introduction with the words: "The earth is alive: living, breathing, and pulsing" His whole theory is based around this maxim, he proposes that the ancient inhabitants of Europe knew this and deliberatly tapped into this energy. Somehow the standing stones and megalithic structures of this mystical time were tapping into and transmitting this energy for the benefit of the land. This is one of the few books that I've read that actually explores the complete history of this theory and proposes new ideas. Much of the research undertaken into Ley lines and standing stones is actually done my tom Graves himself. An excellent work that has little comparison in today's attempts on the subject.

New Fields and Other Stones: On a Child's Death: Poems
Published in Hardcover by Archer Books (October, 1998)
Author: Saul Bennett
Average review score:

Aspects of religion and grief explored in wonderful poetry!
This book is truly incredible. It reaches into the depths of human grief and sorrow helping anyone who has ever lost someone. Mr. Bennett is a true poetic craftsman and creates an overwhelming sense of empathy with the reader. From "The Commuter" to "The Griefmobile", Bennett takes the reader into the process of dealing with grief, seeing loss for what it is, and moving on into the world of eternal sadness with that hint of hope to carry on. I recommend this book for anyone who has lost someone OR anyone who thinks they never will.
